Symphony No 1, in D major "Titan"
Symphony No 1, in D major "Titan"
Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana
The Valencian maestro Gustavo Gimeno, now one of
our most international conductors, conducts the OCV this season in
the capital cities of the three provinces in the Region of
Valencia, in a special concert with two exceptional symphonies:
Mahler’s first and Sibelius’ last. The Finnish composer achieved
his symphonic apotheosis in 7th Symphony, considered his
last great orchestral score. Arranged in a single movement, it
constitutes a synthesis of his previous work. It is the hallmark of
his personal style, in the impressive colour of the orchestration,
the prominence given to the strings in the structures, the opulent,
elegant, captivating sound. Mahler began his symphonic journey in a
big way, with a titanic work that today enjoys enormous popularity
despite not being successful when it premiered. All of its
movements are recognisable by the music lover: the beginning with
the famous lyrical theme from his Lieder eines fahrenden
Gesellen; the second movement in dance rhythm (Ländler); the
superb funeral march; and the expansive finale that recapitulates
previous themes and concludes in a triumphant orchestral
apotheosis.
