Alcina or the shattered glass of a lonely heart.
The London public which came to see this opera was presented by Handel with the enthralling emotional descent of a powerful woman who loses all her physical and metaphysical power as she delivers herself to an unrequited love.
It is a story which is apparently simple and fantastical, but contains within it a reflection on the nature of power and its conditioning factors, the obscurity of souls and the redeeming light which comes from the remains of a cruel heart broken in favour of harmony and love.
