son 4 minutos de película. Sus letras, exóticas historias de
trotamundos románticos y terrenales. Su música, calidad de
categoría internacional que ha brindado, en los Grammy Latinos, con
Santana y que ha ‘tuteado’ a Black EyePeas, a Celine Dion o al gran
Armando Manzanero.
Giras internacionales, Grammy Latinos y Norteamericanos, millones
de discos vendidos, 23 años de carrera… Son y siguen siendo Café
Quijano y acaban de lanzar el mejor disco de su carrera. Se llama
‘Manhattan’ y sí: también es uno de los discos de pop latino más
completos de las últimas décadas. Te vamos a contar por qué, aunque
lo mejor es que lo descorches, tanto en una fiesta ‘mojito en
mano’, como aislándote con tus auriculares más ‘inmersivos’. Porque
si dos grandes cosas tiene este disco son profundidad y horizontes.
La primera, para sumergirte en la calidad de sus ‘historias
cantadas’ y la segunda, para disfrutar -nada más, pero tampoco nada
menos- de lo mejor que nos da la vida.
¿Os acordáis de ‘La Taberna del Buda’? Fue el disco que en 2001
coronó la expansión internacional del grupo con éxitos como ‘Nada
de na’, ‘Desde Brasil’ o la propia ‘Taberna del Buda’. Se cumplen
dos décadas de aquel trabajo y Café Quijano han querido recuperar
el espíritu de aquellas canciones que ‘guionizaron’ historias
clandestinas, exóticas, canallas y viajeras que hoy seguimos
cantando. Y vaya si lo han conseguido. De entrada, atención a los
títulos: ‘Alma negra’, ‘La Jamaicana’, ‘Manhattan’, ‘Ven a ver
amanecer’… Parece que estamos ante una cartelera de cine
intercontinental. Y en cierto modo es así, porque en este disco
Café Quijano han vuelto a hacerlo… han vuelto a componer la música
más viajera, aventurera, exploradora, festiva y emotiva del pop
latino actual.
Y es que el viaje de ‘Manhattan’ transita y recala por diez escalas
excesivas, arrebatadoras y conquistadoras de óptimos estados de
ánimo. ‘Jamaicana’ y ‘Alma negra’ son dos tremendos éxitos -al más
puro estilo ‘tabernero’- que van a conquistar las mejores fiestas
con nuestros pies descalzos sobre la arena, volatilizando el aroma
prohibido de perfume y sudor. ‘Alma Negra’, por cierto, es un
innegable éxito que viene para quedarse por siempre con la eterna
inspiradora de la ‘femme fatale’.
Para quedarse, siempre están también la sensibilidad y la magia que
Café Quijano alcanza con sus boleros. ‘Ayer se fue’ es,
simplemente, uno de los mejores boleros-jazz que se han compuesto
en la música popular de las últimas décadas. Manuel Quijano es todo
un ‘crooner’ que, desde el escenario del Casino, dispara a nuestro
corazón tremendas frases de un desamor agradecido, sereno pero no
menos doloroso. “Ayer, sufrí y, también, pensé que te mereces ser
la más feliz porque a mí me diste más que a ti”… De una manera
arrebatadora, las armonías vocales de Oscar y Raul exponen, en este
tema y en todo el disco la sensibilidad y el trabajo vocal ‘marca
de la casa Quijano’.
Menos mal que el tema que da título al disco (‘Manhattan’) logra
remontarnos del trago del desamor y, de nuevo, nos lanza a la vida
más transatlántica homenajeando al amor, al tequila, a las mujeres
bellas y a los destinos más exóticos, desde el Zaire e Italia,
hasta el ‘The Box Club' en Nueva York, pasando por el Bronx. En
esta misma línea podemos disfrutar de éxitos como ‘Ven a ver
amanecer’, con ese festival de ritmos cubanos que coronan los
últimos 50 segundos de la canción. No podemos obviar otro éxito
como es ‘Mi melancolía’ cuya sonoridad ‘tex-mex’ se nos acomoda
como la seda y dispone un fondo fronterizo a esos antiguos amores
que parpadean, avivan y agitan la nostalgia.
Y qué decir del pop… Café Quijano golpean al ‘maltratador’, sin
ningún filtro lírico, en ‘Quiero’, comprometiéndose con las mujeres
que -aún en el siglo XXI- sufren al ‘macarra barato’, al ‘fantoche
acabado’, al ‘ruin mamarracho’… Otro ‘hit’ de formato pop es ‘Un
sueño vivo’ con Michael Landau (Michael Jackson, Seal, Pink Floyd…)
compartiendo guitarras con Manuel Quijano. El mayor de los Quijano,
por cierto y por primera vez en la carrera del grupo, ha grabado la
mayor parte de las guitarras. El elenco de músicos que hay en el
trabajo forman parte de la primera línea del prestigio latino y
occidental: ‘Vinnie’ Colaiuta, Nathan East, Landau… y por supuesto,
Iván Melón Lewis al piano, teclados, y arreglos de metales,
compartiendo la producción artística con Manuel Quijano.
Amigos y amigas… Manuel, Raul y Oscar lo han vuelto a hacer. Han
hecho un disco gigantesco, inspirado, profundo, festivo… y, lo más
importante, han hecho un disco que vuelve a convertir la música
latina en un ritual artístico atemporal, imperecedero e inmortal
que todos vamos a volver a sentir, bailar y celebrar.
