DIALOGUES DES CARMÉLITES
Francis Poulenc 1899-1963
An opera in three acts
Libretto by the composer, based on the eponymous play
by Georges Bernanos
There are productions that do not show the passage of time. The special touch of genius with which they were given life by their creator has made them imperishable. This is the case of stage director Robert Carsen's Dialogues des Carmélites. Premiered in 1997 in Amsterdam, it is now considered a reference version of Poulenc's masterpiece. The masterful design of the lighting and Carsen’s gift for expressing everything through the acting of singers and the movement of the extras, without the need for scenery, are key to how he gets the audience involved in this moving story. Riccardo Minasi conducts the score for the first time, with a large cast that includes the veteran Doris Soffel in the outstanding role of Madame de Croissy and the promising voices of the Bolivian-Albanian soprano Carolina López Moreno and the French tenor Valentin Thill.
