The great dancer and
choreographer Antonia Mercé, known by the artistic name of La
Argentina (she was born in Buenos Aires while her parents were on
tour) renewed Spanish dance and spread it to all of Europe from
Paris, where she settled with her company Les ballets
Espagnols from 1927 to 1929. There she premiered new ballets
with music commissioned from the most modern Spanish composers of
the time, including Ernesto Halffter and Óscar Esplá from Alicante.
The two were on a double bill with La Argentina in 1928, when the
dancer presented Halffter’s Sonatina and Esplá’s El
contrabandista, receiving a resounding success. The Antonio
Najarro Company is reviving those historic performances in a new
production by Les Arts and the Juan March Foundation that is
inspired by the existing documentation (notes, costumes, curtains)
of the Parisian premiere.
