Manuel Moreno Maya, “El Pele”, who has won the Gold Medal for Merit
in the Fine Arts awarded by the Ministry of Culture, is a cantaor
of great ability and an undoubtedly expressive personality, “a
flamenco animal in its purest state”. Born in 1954 in the
neighbourhood of San Lorenzo, Cordoba, he began his career on the
back of his success at the Nacional Flamenco Competition of
Cordoba, in which he won two prizes, for soleá and bulerías. His
musical intuition, knowledge and innovative personality, in search
of new forms based on the roots of flamenco, have led him to share
the stage with stars such as David Bowie and Prince, and above all
with the guitarist Vicente Amigo, who brought about a revolution in
the artist’s internal creative universe.
