Manuel de Falla wrote the music
and libretto for this piece for puppets and humans in 1923, based
on the story of the love affairs of Melisendra and her beloved
Gaiferos, who fight to free her beloved from the captivity to which
the Moorish king Marsilio submits her. Based on Chapter 26 of Part
Two of Cervantes’ Don Quixote de la Mancha, the puppet
theatre attended by the public and the wandering knight merges in
the troubled mind of Don Alonso Quijano into an almost surreal
synthesis between reality and reverie.
