Ermonela Jaho: This Albanian
soprano is song transfigured into pure emotion. Her credo is that
“to make others cry, you have to cry yourself first”. This is
corroborated by her Butterfly and Traviata, the two leading roles
she has performed most often (thirty-odd times each). She is
unsurpassed in her outstanding identification with the role she is
performing and her stage presence. Audiences give her a standing
ovation after every opera or recital, whether at the Metropolitan,
Covent Garden or the Vienna State Opera. Determined to conquer the
city of Valencia as well, she is making her debut at Les Arts with
a carefully constructed programme that brings together Italian bel
canto authors with the most representative composers of French and
Italian romanticism.
