The Russian composer Tchaikovsky has been one of the favourite
composers of the Orchestra of the Region of Valencia since its
foundation, and also of James Gaffigan. This
season, in addition to his performance of The Queen of
Spades in Les Arts, he conducts the OCV at the Palau de la
Música in Valencia and in Castellón, in Tchaikovsky’s last work,
6th Symphony, the Pathétique, premiered a few
days before his death. It is the most beautiful expression of the
author's personality and feelings, as evidenced, above all, by the
final mournful Adagio, perhaps a premonition of his own death.
Wagner also expressed his most sincere feelings towards Matilde
Wesendonck in the beautiful Lieder that he composed based on her
poems. The dramatic and passionate score, which would later inspire
some of the Tristan motifs, is sung by American mezzo-soprano Jamie
Barton.
