Jenůfa or the price of innocence.
This is a commentary with little compassion on jealousy and personal reputation in a human scenario marked by flashes of light: love, as requited and maternal; shards of obscurity: love as outraged, physical violence and murder; and the echoes of the traditional village and the cadences of the Czech language and musical phrasing considered eccentric in its day, interspersed with brief melodies and repeated musical themes.
Confused and violent emotions, existential claustrophobia, ancestral habits and secrets, religion, fear and brutal animality are the stones along a path which leads to a final light which perfectly defines the phrase of Jenůfa’s lover: “nothing matters if you are with me.”
