L’incoronazione di Poppea
Claudio Monteverdi
Dramma musicale in one prologue and three actsLibretto by Giovanni Francesco Busenello
L’Incoronazzione di
Poppea, or immoral empathy with crime.
Lust’s struggle with virtue could be the definition of this opera, which is as complex as it is beautiful and old, written for that vice-ridden and excommunicated Venice. It shows us a new Rome for a castrated Nero, bloody and irrational, at the feet of a Poppea as egotistic as she is seductive and diabolical, to whom reasons of state and the death of others do not inconvenience at all.
Scandal is the greatness of this work, which with its beauties shines a light on the infamous and illuminates the staging of the crimes committed. Can beauty be perverse? Can you love what in theory you hate?
