MACBETH
Macbeth depicts the struggle between ambition and conscience in the wasteland of the soul, and is a work of Shakespeare’s later period. This was Giuseppe Verdi’s first adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s plays, but the opera already demonstrates Verdi’s interest in the innermost and darkest shadows of the soul and the blinding and confusing light of human conscience, which from this time on would always appear in his operatic works. A message of hope awaits the audience at the end of this metaphysical drama: only conscience is capable - though not always - of overcoming the evil that reduces the human soul to waste.On the stage, it has been given a powerful and challenging production by the Australian film and theatrical director Benedict Andrews. His work for the Royal Danish Opera production has focused on a precise and demanding treatment of the acting, highlighting the most violent aspects of the sinister couple created by Shakespeare: cruel killers whose overriding desire is to achieve power. The stage design is restrained and functional, with few props. It allows the great empty spaces to breathe and gives a key role to the striking lighting that underlines the dramatic and nightmare atmosphere in which the characters are immersed.
The title role is shared by two of the best known Verdian voices of today, the Italian baritone, Luca Salsi (who opened the current La Scala season with this role) and the Georgian, George Gagnidze; the admired soprano Anna Pirozzi (who sang a superb Abigaille in the two productions of Nabucco offered by Les Arts) takes on the role of the horrifying Lady Macbeth; with Marko Mimica and Giovanni Sala as Banco and Macduff. Presiding in the orchestra pit is the Italian conductor Michele Mariotti.
Strobe lighting effects will be used during some moments of this performance.
