Sir Mark Elder is part of the list of regular conductors invited by
Les Arts. After his outstanding version of Strauss’
Heldenleben at the helm of the OCV, on this occasion the
British maestro is offering us Mahler: the long Adagio from his
unfinished 10th Symphony, the composer's final farewell to
later romanticism, to his exciting and particular musical universe
of contrasting passages of touching calm and orchestral climax that
illustrate states of serenity, anguish, uncertainty or pain of the
composer and human beings in general. And there is Shostakovich,
heir to Mahler's orchestral architecture, who displays his intense
emotional charge in the 4th Symphony, a masterpiece of
colossal dimensions, both in duration and in terms of orchestral
requirements, with more than a hundred musicians.
