PAN Y TOROS
Francisco Asenjo BarbieriZarzuela in three acts
Libretto by José Picón
A face-off between two Spains
Premiered at the end of 1864,
Pan y Toros is a large-scale zarzuela (in three acts) which depicts
Madrid at the end of the 18th Century like one of Goya’s
tapestries, telling the story of an intrigue between conservatives
and liberals in which the decisive presence of Manuel Godoy is
finally revealed, as true agent for Carlos IV’s plans for Spain. In
Pan y Toros, the fate of a nation also plays its cards in
a game of chance where the composer Barbieri deals with foreign
intrusion into Spain's designs with his usual mastery and musical
brilliance.
