THE GOLDEN STOOL
Gorges Ocloo 1988
AfrOpera
Libretto by Gorges Ocloo and Josse De Pauw
Gorges Ocloo is a multidisciplinary creator of African origin. He
studied in Brussels and has been artist-in-residence at the LOD
muziektheater in Ghent since 2020. His latest project, The Golden
Stool, is a production brimming with colour, music and dance, based
on pieces from our Western musical tradition. Ten women, among them
soprano Nobulumko Mngxekeza-Nziramasanga and mezzo-soprano
Nonkululeko Nkwinti, perform arias from operas such as Carmen and
Rinaldo, the Ode to Joy from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and The
Blue Danube, in versions that sound fresh and steeped in the
striking sounds and rhythms of African music.
